The Cecil Hotel is located in downtown Los Angeles, California and was built in 1927. It has 600 guest rooms, and at one time was a popular destination for tourists and businessmen. Over the years, the hotel has gained a reputation for being associated with crime and tragedy. In the 1980s, the hotel was known for drug use and prostitution, and in 2013, the body of a Canadian student, Elisa Lam, was found in the hotel's water tank. The incident sparked international attention and the hotel was subsequently rebranded as the Stay on Main Hotel and Hostel. In 2017, the hotel changed owners and underwent a renovation, with the goal of attracting a younger, hipper crowd.
